Episode #003 I Just Had Another Idea

Chip has carried the unfamiliar yellow pencil only a few steps when someone gasps from a doorway nobody remembers noticing.

“My pencil!” Glitch says, already reaching for it. “The important one nobody is supposed to move.”

Chip looks at the studio beyond Glitch, then back at the pencil. “In my defense, it was under Dozer.”

Behind them, one unfinished sign appears to have developed an entire professional network.

The pencil is still in Chip’s hand when Glitch crosses the square and stops so quickly that Mo lowers his mug.

“There you are.” Glitch turns the pencil until its three teal marks face upward, then taps the matching marks on a golden-yellow sketchbook. “I lost this during an extremely productive afternoon.”

Socks brightens. “How productive?”

Glitch considers the question with professional seriousness. “That depends on whether you measure productivity by completed assignments or by compelling evidence of momentum.”

Chef Crumbs raises one eyebrow. “Those sound like different totals.”

“Wildly.” Glitch accepts the pencil from Chip and inspects its point. “Thank you. I checked every pencil cup except the places the pencil actually was.”

Dozer adjusts the blanket from which it was recovered. “It had a quiet afternoon.”

Glitch laughs and gestures toward a cozy doorway near the edge of the square. “Come see what it started.”

Chip follows first. “For the record, I was already holding it responsibly.”

Glitch rolls the idea board closer and taps the first sketch with the recovered pencil.

“The assignment was one welcome sign for the bulletin board. Simple, warm, readable.” Glitch points to the unfinished sign on the easel. “Then the sign needed a better frame.”

The next sketch shows the frame on a portable stand.

“The frame deserved flexibility. Flexibility suggested wheels. Wheels made one sign feel underutilized, so the stand became a supply cart.”

Glitch rolls the actual three-tier cart forward with an easy practiced motion.

Chip nods appreciatively. “It has cup storage. That’s how you know an idea has matured.”

“The cart needed labels,” Glitch continues, “but labels without a visual hierarchy are just tiny signs arguing with each other. So I designed a complete color-and-symbol organization system.”

Socks studies the connected diagrams. “This is excellent work.”

“It really is,” Chef Crumbs agrees. Then he looks back at the easel. “Is the welcome sign finished?”

Everyone turns.

The sign still has an undecorated center and one unattached frame piece.

Glitch lowers the pencil. “Define finished.”

“Finished enough to hang in the square this afternoon,” Chef Crumbs says. Through the window, the bulletin board waits in a patch of warm light. “We’re welcoming visitors at three. The sign needs to welcome them before they leave.”

“Right. Absolutely.” Glitch raises the pencil toward the sign, then stops. “I should attach the frame first. Unless the frame should match the cart labels, because consistency builds trust. But the labels need their color key, and the key belongs on the board—”

Glitch turns toward the rolling board, notices the portable stand, and changes direction again.

“Although if the stand is nearly done, finishing it would free the frame. Unless I improve the wheel locks while everything is accessible.”

Socks opens his mouth, recognizes the familiar terrain, and closes it again.

Glitch looks across the studio. Every project is clever. Every project is useful. Every project appears one satisfying hour from completion.

“I know what all of these need,” Glitch says more quietly. “I just can’t tell which need gets to be first.”

Mo sets his mug down on the worktable.

“Then we don’t need another idea,” he says. “We need an order.”

Chef Crumbs steps beside the easel. “For this afternoon, the sign needs three things: a clear welcome, a secure frame, and a way to hang beside the bulletin board. It does not need transportation.”

Glitch nods. “The transportation is excellent, though.”

“Very,” Chef Crumbs says. “It can remain excellent tomorrow.”

Socks examines the laid-out pieces with an inventor’s precision. “Required: sign board, frame, two fasteners, paint details, mounting points. Optional: portable stand, wheels, cart conversion, revised labels, universal symbol key, and whatever this charming little arrow is intended to do.”

Glitch turns the rounded arrow between two fingers. “Mostly rotate.”

“Strong optional feature,” Socks says approvingly.

Mo draws three boxes on the rolling board and connects them with one straight line. “Paint. Assemble. Hang.”

Glitch studies the sequence. “That is aggressively simple.”

“It has a deadline,” Mo replies.

Chip looks at the neat pile of optional plans. “What happens to the rest?”

Glitch’s attention catches on them again.

Chef Crumbs answers before the pile can become active work. “We keep every idea. We just need somewhere they can wait without holding a meeting.”

Chip finds a sturdy divided project box and paints a coral-orange circle with two cream pause bars on the front.

“This,” he announces, “is the Not Right Now box. Not ‘bad.’ Not ‘never.’ Not ‘we forgot where we put it.’”

He holds up the first sketch like an official document. “Portable sign stand?”

“Later,” Glitch says, painting a turquoise spiral along the welcome sign.

Chip files it carefully. “Cart label hierarchy?”

“Later.”

“Improved label hierarchy for the label hierarchy?”

Glitch pauses. “Definitely later, but keep that near the top.”

Chip places every sketch and small component into the divided sections, closes the lid, and sits back proudly. “All ideas preserved. None currently making eye contact.”

Dozer settles beside the box, blanket pooled around his broad paws.

Glitch glances toward it. “I may need to check one detail.”

Dozer rests one paw gently on the lid. “It’ll still be brilliant after three.”

Glitch smiles and turns back to the easel.

The pencil moves. Color fills the sign. For the first time all afternoon, the next step stays the next step.

Glitch finishes the painted details, sets the sign into its warm wooden frame, and tightens the second rounded fastener.

Socks steadies one side. “Frame secure.”

Chef Crumbs checks the mounting points. “Readable, warm, and hangable.”

Mo looks at the three completed boxes on the planning board. “Suspiciously efficient.”

Glitch steps back. Turquoise, lime, purple, coral-orange, and cream details curl across the honey-brown wood without crowding the welcome message. The whole design feels bright, handmade, and entirely at home in the neighborhood.

Then the small rounded arrow near the upper-right corner turns slowly on its brass pivot.

Chef Crumbs watches it complete half a rotation. “Does that indicate anything?”

“No,” Glitch says. “It just seemed emotionally necessary.”

Socks adjusts his glasses. “The balance is excellent.”

Chip nods from beside the closed idea box. “It welcomes people in several possible directions.”

Dozer keeps his paw on the lid. “Keep the arrow.”

Chef Crumbs smiles. “Keep the arrow.”

Glitch lifts the finished sign. “Then let’s get this installed before the arrow develops a committee.”

The finished sign settles securely beside the community bulletin board just as afternoon light reaches the square.

Socks gives the frame one final stability check. Chef Crumbs straightens, satisfied. Chip stands beneath the decorative arrow and waits for it to point at him.

It rotates past.

“I respect its independence,” Chip says.

Mo takes a sip of coffee. “It has no stated obligations.”

Glitch looks from the warm cream center to the painted spirals, geometric accents, and slowly turning arrow. Nothing has been polished into anonymity. The sign is practical, complete, and unmistakably theirs.

Dozer settles at the edge of the gathering with his blanket. “Worth getting up for.”

From Dozer, the review lands like a standing ovation.

As the others admire the finished work, Glitch notices one ordinary rounded pushpin securing a nearby notice. Glitch studies its shape, then the bulletin board roof, then the rotating arrow.

The familiar spark returns. Glitch lifts the yellow pencil.

“I just had another idea.”
