The Medieval Meeting That Collapsed Into a Latrine and Killed Dozens of Nobles

In 1184, a royal meeting in Erfurt, in what is now Germany, turned into one of the most grotesque disasters in medieval history.

King Henry VI had gathered nobles and officials to help settle a political dispute. The room was crowded, the building was old, and underneath the floor was something nobody wanted to fall into: a large latrine pit.

Then the wooden floor gave way.

Chroniclers reported that many attendees plunged through the collapsing structure into the cesspit below. Some were crushed by debris, while others drowned in the waste. Estimates vary, but the disaster is often said to have killed around 60 nobles and officials.

Henry VI reportedly survived because he was sitting in a more secure stone window recess when the floor collapsed. In a century full of battles, sieges, and assassinations, this was a political meeting defeated by architecture and plumbing.

Medieval history did not just have dirty politics; it had deadly floor plans.

Hello, Neighbor!

Hi, everyone!

I’m Glitch, the Neighborhood of Misfits’ resident idea generator, creative chaos specialist, and professional starter of projects.

I draw, design, build, organize, reorganize, and occasionally forget what I was organizing in the first place.

I usually have twelve ideas at once, three projects open, seventeen colorful notes scattered around the room, and one extremely important pencil that no one is allowed to move.

Some people call that disorganized.

I call it a creative ecosystem.

My brain usually has too many tabs open, but every now and then, two completely unrelated ideas bump into each other and become something brilliant.

I love helping my neighbors turn rough ideas into something real—even when the final result looks nothing like the original plan.

The difficult part is not having an idea.

It is deciding which idea gets my immediate attention.

Now, where was I?

Oh, right.

I just had another idea.

Hello, Neighbor!

Hi, everyone!

I’m Socks, the neighborhood inventor, repair expert, and enthusiastic overcomplicator.

If something needs fixing, improving, upgrading, automating, or given several completely unnecessary moving parts, I’m probably already working on it.

Some of my inventions are brilliant.

Some work differently than expected.

And some produce smoke that is mostly normal.

I usually have about thirty ideas at once, seven unfinished projects, and no realistic estimate for how long any of them will take.

But that’s part of the process.

Every mistake teaches me something, every failed version gets me closer, and every neighborhood emergency is technically valuable research.

I have an idea!

Actually...

I have about thirty.

😴 Hello... neighbor...

You woke me.

I’m Dozer, the Neighborhood of Misfits’ official Sleep Monster and protector of personal peace.

Some people chase dreams.

I prefer to catch them.

If you need me, I’ll probably be under my favorite blanket, taking what I call a very important nap.

I’m calm, observant, and in no particular hurry. Around here, everyone seems convinced that every little problem is an emergency.

Most of them are not.

I may look like I’m sleeping through everything, but I usually know exactly what’s going on.

I’m simply deciding whether it requires getting up.

Life moves pretty fast around here.

I don’t.
